OVERVIEW
A unique facility operated by the Department of State's Office of Fire Prevention and Control,
the Academy of Fire Science offers courses in many areas including hazardous materials, arson
investigation and general fire service training. The general fire service training areas include fire
suppression, technical rescue, fire equipment maintenance, incident command, fire instructor development,
fire officer development, firefighter health and safety, dispatcher training, emergency medical technician (EMT),
EMT refresher, and EMT pilot core material training. State sponsored National Fire Academy (NFA) courses are
also available.
The Fire Academy houses a fully operational sprinkler laboratory, a computer room available
for analyzing fires or predicting the flow of a hazardous materials plume, a large table-top simulator for
command training, confined space simulator, self-contained breathing apparatus training maze, and a
three-story burn building. The Academy's library has an
extensive collection of fire-related materials including books, periodicals, technical papers,
manufacturers information, and videotapes.
The Fire Academy also offers National Certification testing for Firefighter I and II,
Fire Instructor I and II, and Fire Officer I and II. Additional National Certifications will become available
each year.
Speakers from across the country come to the Academy to keep firefighters up-to-date on the
latest trends in the field.
Several seminars are held each year to continue education and interaction with different groups. Among
them the Firemen's Association of the State of New York (FASNY) EMS, Fire Police, Fire/Arson Investigation,
County Fire Coordinator's, and the Regional Fire Administrator's Seminar. Additionally, an annual Public
Fire Safety Education Program and a Women Firefighters Weekend are also held.
Available to volunteer and career firefighters, members of large and small departments, men and
women, the Fire Academy includes all accommodations to make any stay pleasant. Meals and lodging
are available at an affordable price. And the facility is handicapped accessible.
There are plenty of places to go to during off-hours, including a lounge, TV room, activity
center, exercise room and fitness trail.

The OFPC's residential programs are conducted at the Academy of Fire Science.
The residential programs:
- develop fire administrators, fire commanders, skilled instructors and technical personnel;
- provide a permanent facility staffed with skilled personnel employing modern training techniques and using a physical
plant which makes it possible to create realistic fire conditions and develop fire command programs;
- offer curricula which meet the full range of training needs for the state's fire service particularly for
leaders and technicians; and
- conduct cooperative programs to share talents, facilities and ideas with all of the state's public, private,
educational and industrial agencies active in public administration, public safety and fire safety.
LOCATION AND TRANSPORTATION

The Academy is located at the intersection of NYS Route 14 and College Avenue in the Village
of Montour Falls, Schuyler County, the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. It is approximately
40 miles south of exit 41 or 42 of the NYS Thruway and 20 miles north of Elmira and NYS Route 17.
Elmira Corning Regional Airport is approximately
15 miles from the Academy, where car rentals are available.

The main, five-story building contains administrative offices, student housing and lounges, the cafeteria and bookstore.
The adjacent classroom building provides eight traditional classrooms, a computer center, a 298-seat auditorium, a fitness room, and a
library. Both these buildings are fully sprinklered.
Facilities for hands-on training include the arson simulator and burn building, void search and rescue simulator, hazardous materials
training site, sprinkler laboratory, SCBA maze, roof simulator, Avet area, and a confined space mock-up.
Fishing, baseball, volleyball, and jogging are among the outdoor recreational opportunities.
ACCOMMODATIONS | Top of the Page
The administration and residential building accommodates a total of 190 students in 68
double rooms, 6 single bed handicap rooms, 3 12-person dormitories, and 2 six bed dormitories. Rooms are assigned on a first-come/first
served basis. the Academy maintains a list of nearby hotels and motels, or you can contact
the Schuyler County Chamber of Commerce and look for Montour
Falls or Watkins Glen accommodations. Limited accommodations are available for disabled students.
MEALS | Top of the Page
Meals are served cafeteria style. A full-service breakfast or lunch, offering a variety of hot and cold entrees including soup at lunch, is provided. Dinner consists of a choice of entrees, salad bar, and dessert. Coffee, tea and snacks are available throughout the day. Medical dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice at the time of registration. Note — Bagged lunches are available upon request for off campus courses or departing students. Dinner (for students arriving the evening before) or breakfast (for 1pm start times) may not be available. Serving hours
are:
Breakfast — 7:00 a.m. - 7:45 a.m.
Lunch — 12:00 noon - 12:45 p.m.
Dinner — 5:30 p.m. - 6:15 p.m.

Resident students may check in after 5 p.m. on the evening preceding an 8 a.m. class start —
dinner is not served that night without prior arrangement.
For classes starting at 1 p.m., check in time is after 11 a.m. the same day — no lunch is served on check-in day.

Rooms are equipped with bed linens, blankets, pillows, towels, soap, a radio/alarm clock
and phones. Televisions are located in common areas. The Academy does not have a laundry
facility.
RULES

The buildings are non-smoking. Alcohol is not allowed in the buildings or on the
grounds of the Academy. However, the Chief of Fire Academy has the discretion to issue
a group permit to serve alcohol on the site for a time-limited particular event.
Dress is informal. Any special clothing requirements will be detailed in your acceptance notice.
